Technical Writer - Couchbase Mobile at Couchbase
Manchester, GB
Documentation at Couchbase is a crucial component of the product experience. Couchbase documentation delivers the essential information to developers and system administrators that enable them to effectively use our product.
We are looking for a Sr. Technical Writer with passion and enthusiasm for communicating information with keen attention to detail. In this role, you will lead the development of content for Couchbase Mobile products and ensure that users and customers get the information they need to build applications using the Couchbase Mobile platform. You will get to work with a global team of technical writers and stakeholders (product managers, developers, quality engineers and support engineers) to create a customer-focused documentation set. As our Sr. Technical Writer, your documentation will be complete and consistent across multiple manuals and formats.

    • Create easy to understand and in-depth technical content - documentation, code samples, tutorials, or multimedia content, which demonstrate the best and easiest way to use Couchbase Mobile products.
    • Take raw information and advice about product features and behaviors and try out the features as a user would, and use your experiences to develop content.
    • Proactively identify documentation needs and gaps, establish feedback loops to gather customer feedback, and then work closely with key stakeholders to prioritize and plan documentation updates.
    • Demonstrate a willingness to question and challenge the information and advice, and expand on it to provide different levels of information.
    • Edit, clarify, and proofread documents written by other staff and work with non-writers on ways to improve their contributions to documentation.
    • Encourage and facilitate documentation contributions from internal and external contributors.
    • As an integral member of the Documentation team, always look for ways to improve and optimize - be it the user experience on the docs site, processes, or tools. Share your point of view and respect input from other team members.

Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge of modular documentation practices. Experience writing in a lightweight mark-up language (e.g. Markdown, AsciiDoc).
    • Illustration or diagramming experience; ability to turn information into an easy to understand illustration.
    • Ability to read and understand code written in HTML or XML and use the command line for basic instructions/scripting.

Minimum Qualifications

    • 5 years of technical writing experience on software technologies, preferably with a focus on Mobile App development or Mobile solutions.
    • Keen eye for detail and for the depth and breadth of information to provide users with exactly what they need.
    • Familiarity with native and/or cross-platform or hybrid mobile app development on one or more mobile platforms including iOS, Android, Windows.
    • Experience driving documentation for key product features and/or SDKs.
    • Familiar with one of the Mobile SDK programming languages (Swift, Java, C#, Objective-C)
    • Experience with a Mobile SDK IDE: Xcode, Android Studio, or Xamarin Studio.
    • Ability to document the core details, as well as higher-level information and step-by-step instructions about the product.
    • Working knowledge of version control systems such as Git, Subversion, or CVS.
    • A collaborative style and an outstanding team player willing to work in a busy office and with remote Couchbase employees as part of a global team.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
